Technology and its impact on Trade Shows

Each year we attend a number of Trade Shows relevant to the markets we serve. Each year these shows play out pretty much the same, regardless of Trade focus. This year I’ve noted some interesting changes taking place which center on the use of technology. Many of the organizations we belong to are sponsoring Virtual Conferences in addition to the regularly scheduled Shows. I’m sure that some of this has to do with the economy, as companies are looking for ways to save money and still reach potential buyers. Virtual conferences are certainly more cost effective for participants. One of our Principle’s (Shawn O’Hara-Smith) recently participated in a virtual conference. Her feedback was positive and in line with what others have experienced. Obviously there is a cost benefit for both participants and attendees. No travel required. Ease of access to information, demos and interaction with company representatives are some of the other benefits being sited.

Another phenomenon which seems to be sweeping the Trade Show circuit is the use of Twitter. Twitter has gained popularity as a means of exchanging information in a real-time format. Several recent Trade Shows were covered at length via Twitter. Participants and attendees alike sent “Tweets” before, during and after the Trade Shows. They were used to generate excitement and to announce events beforehand; used to comment on seminars, demos, meetings and other various activities during the show; and used to send Thank You messages, share Show statistics and to reflect on the Show’s overall success afterwards.

As I prepare for my trip to L.A. to attend LegalTech West this week, I am eager to see firsthand how technology and innovation will be applied to enhance the event. I have been setting up appointments and networking with folks beforehand. I will be “Tweeting” during and after the event as well (Twitter handle @johnkellenjames). If you have participated in or attended a virtual Trade show or utilized Twitter (or other forms of Social Media) at a recent Show, I’d enjoy hearing your thoughts and comments.
