Are your Managers hiring the best candidates for the job or are they hiring the candidates they think will fit into the corporate environment the best? These are not necessarily the same thing.
Hiring the best candidate for the job requires a Manager to understand what skills a candidate must possess in order to be successful. Past performance is a key indicator of future success. Does the candidate have the experience and a documented track record of success that will make them successful in this new role?
Hiring a candidate based on their ability to fit in speaks to a candidates character traits. Hiring the candidate whom a Manager believes will fit into the corporate environment best is not always the wisest decision, especially if they lack the requisite skills and track record to make them successful. Top Performers typically have the character traits most organizations are seeking; a strong work ethic, self-starters, team players, etc.
Character traits are certainly important. However, they are not always easy to accurately identify during the interview process. Have you or someone on your Management team ever hired a candidate whom everyone fell in love with during the interview process, only to have them fail miserably a month or two down the road? In hindsight don’t you wish you had some way of gauging the likelihood of their success?
If your organization does not already utilize Testing and Assessment tools, you should seriously consider adding them to your process. Tests and assessments can provide a wealth of information that otherwise might not surface for months. They allow you to design a customized behavioral template that you can use in the selection and hiring process. They can confirm and reveal characteristics which will add value to your organization. They can help you identify areas that might pose a problem with a candidates’ performance. They can even help you assess the strengths and weaknesses of your current team. Testing and assessment tools can provide you and your hiring managers with quantifiable data which can help you make more informed hiring decisions. Testing and assessment tools can help your organization identify not only the Top Performers, but also the candidates whose skills and character traits will best fit with your corporate culture.
